About Laura Helper

HomeAbout Laura Helper

My education

I earned an A.B. in English (with a minor in history) at Bryn Mawr College, an M.A. in cultural anthropology at Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology at Rice University. A 12-month fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History funded my dissertation fieldwork.

My professional experience

Before starting my editorial business in 2005, I worked in a variety of in-house and freelance positions in academic publishing: I was an editorial assistant to an acquisitions editor at Cornell University Press, a clerk and publicist at Memphis’s independent Burke’s Book Store, the marketing director at the University of Arkansas Press, and a freelance indexer and copywriter.

MY COMMITMENT

My scholarly and publishing interests intersect: my commitment is to honor individual voices, critique systemic inequalities, and work democratically.
